Bryan Smith used to tend his families vegetables as a child, and he became reacquainted with the joy of gardening on a vegetable patch in May of last year, when his son and daughter-in-law rented him a local allotment as a 60th birthday present.
With brambles and weeds higher than himself, the task looked daunting and it took a lot of hard work during last summer to get the patch ready for any kind of planting. From the outset, Bryan was determined his allotment would be organic and include some biodynamic methods, such as planting by the cycles of the moon and during favoured times.
Born in Nowich and educated locally, Bryan spent most of his working life in the Norfolk Fire service. He eventually retired in 2000 having served his final 10 years as the Chief Fire Officer. These days, he has many interests, as well as taking a keen involvement in his family, with 4 grown up children and 6 grandchildren to consider.
If you're thinking of taking up an allotment for yourself, then you'll doubtless be inspired by the efforts of Bryan, as he journeys through planning and establishing a vegetable garden from nothing and with relatively little experience.
